Story of Arvind Kejriwal, an IITian-bureaucrat: Worked in Tata Steel for 3 years, formed a party in 2012, became CM for the first time in 2013


 Arvind Kejriwal was born on 16 August 1968 in Kheda village of Siwani district of Haryana. Arvind passed the IIT-JEE examination in 1985 and graduated from IIT Kharagpur in Mechanical Engineering. After leaving college in 1989, Kejriwal worked in Tata Steel for about 3 years.

After this he resigned from the job in 1992 to prepare for the Civil Services Examination. In 1995, Kejriwal passed the UPSC exam. He was selected in Indian Revenue Service (IRS). After this he was appointed to the post of Assistant Commissioner in the Income Tax Department.

In the year 2000, Kejriwal requested for 2 years paid leave to pursue higher education. Kejriwal was given leave on the condition that he would not resign from the job for at least three years after joining the office again. If he does so, he will be paid the salary given during this period.

Resigned from job in 2006

Two years later, in 2002, Arvind Kejriwal came to office, but he was not appointed for a year. However, during this period he continued to receive salary. Therefore, Kejriwal applied for 18 months leave without pay, which was granted to him. In 2006, Arvind Kejriwal resigned from the post of Joint Income Tax Commissioner in New Delhi.

However, the central government claimed that by not working for 3 years they had violated the agreement signed in 2000. In 2011, Arvind Kejriwal, with the help of his friends, paid Rs 9 lakh 27 thousand 787 as dues to the government.

In 2006, Arvind Kejriwal was honored with the Ramon Magsaysay Award for his campaign against corruption.

Formed India Against Corruption Group in 2011, went on hunger strike

In 2011, Arvind Kejriwal, along with social activist Anna Hazare, formed the India Against Corruption Group (IAC), demanding the implementation of the Jan Lokpal Bill. On August 16, Anna Hazare sat on a hunger strike at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi demanding the Jan Lokpal Bill. This movement continued till 28 August.

At that time, Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi, Kumar Vishwas, Sanjay Singh and Manish Sisodia played important roles in this movement along with Anna Hazare. After Anna Hazare, Arvind Kejriwal emerged as the main face of this movement.

Government formed in 2013, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal formed for the first time, formed his political party on 2 October 2012. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was formed on 24 November 2012. In 2013, Aam Aadmi Party contested the Delhi Assembly elections and Arvind Kejriwal defeated former Congress CM Sheila Dikshit.

Aam Aadmi Party did not get majority in this election, but Congress supported it from outside instead of joining the government, due to which Arvind Kejriwal became the Chief Minister of Delhi. Then elections were held in the year 2015 and Aam Aadmi Party reached the assembly by winning a record 67 seats.

In the 2020 assembly elections also, Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party won 62 out of 70 seats. Kejriwal took oath as Chief Minister for the third time on 16 February 2020 at Ramlila Maidan.


Kejriwal's wife was an IRS officer

Kejriwal married his batchmate Sunita in 1995. In the year 2016, Sunita Kejriwal had taken VRS from her service. She was an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer. Arvind Kejriwal has two children – son Pulkit and daughter Harshita. Kejriwal's daughter is also an IIT graduate and has been a football player. Meanwhile, Kejriwal's son Pulkit is in college.
